Chapter 5

Waking up should have been wonderful because she’d had such an incredible time but instead, she’d woken up to a call from work at the crack of dawn. Not the best way to start the day by any means.

“What do you mean they’re trying to back out of the contract? We’ve already presented the idea and they loved it.” Christine couldn’t believe her ears when Walter himself called first thing to tell her that the big account they’d been working on was falling through.

“They loved the presentation and the whole concept, Walter. It’s a totally different direction than anyone else thought of and they loved the originality. What happened?”

Walter responded with a gruff, “Who the hell knows? That’s why you’re going to go down there and figure it out. I’ve had my secretary book your flight for later this afternoon, but you need to make some calls and see what you can discover. Rachael will send you an email with your flight details.” Rachael was his assistant, a top-notch woman who scared everyone that crossed her.

“Walter, do you have any idea what’s going on? I can’t go in there blind.”

“I have no idea; the only thing I’ve heard are crazy rumors. It sounds like someone’s been spreading all kinds of stories designed to discredit us. This is going to severely damage the company image if we can’t put a stop to it.”

“We’ll get to the bottom of the issue and get the campaign back on track. This will bring the company national attention as long as everything goes smoothly. I won’t lose this based on rumors.” Christine knew this campaign would be one of the highlights of her career if it didn’t get completely screwed up first.

“Give me a call as soon as you know anything, Christine. I’ll keep digging on this end.”

“All right, Walter, let me get started on this and I’ll call you later.” Christine disconnected with a frustrated sigh. Not only was it going to be a really long day, she was going to miss seeing Michael later.

“Okay, I have to get packed. A couple of days’ worth of clothes should be fine.” After quickly texting Michael that she would be gone for a few days, she began to organize her To-Do List and make calls. She had to find out more about what was going on. Walter hadn’t given her a lot to go on and she refused to go into the situation completely uninformed.

“Maybe I misread the situation and she wasn’t that into me.” Michael was trying to keep it together but after not hearing back from Christine for nearly two weeks, he finally broke down and told Dave what was going on. Well, most of it. Dave had been driving him crazy trying to figure out why he’d been so blue lately, but Michael hadn’t wanted to talk about it.

“I thought we had such a good time. We talked so much and the chemistry was off the charts. I just can’t figure out what happened.
